First Introduction of Aikido to SMKA Maahad Hamidiah

Yoshinkan Aikido was first introduced to the school mainly through the help of Mr. Akram Zaki bin Abdul Rashid, a teacher of this school. A martial artist himself and having obtained black belts in Silat Gayong Pusaka and Goshin-Ryu Karate Do, he first contacted Mr. Ramlan Ahmed, a name he often heard from his mutual friends and expressed interest in learning the fine art of Aikido. Before long, Mr. Akram Zaki's involvement in the art was further strenghtened when he helped to become the Organizing Chairman for the Official Opening of Aikido Yoshinkan Shudokan Malaysia on October 19th, 2003 in Seri Kembangan.

The dedicated teacher realized that the peaceful art of Yoshinkan Aikido could and should be promoted at school level. Naturally, Mr. Akram Zaki started at his own school. With Sensei Ramlan's agreement on the idea, Mr. Akram Zaki went through numerous discussions with the school's administration namely the Head of Co-curriculum, Mrs. Abidah Konchong whom had finally agreed to add another form of martial art to it's already existing number of martial arts being practised here: Silat Gayong Pusaka, Silat Cekak Hanafi, Tae Kwan Do and Goshin-Ryu Karate Do. To further realise his plan, Mr. Akram Zaki established Aikido as a club and entrusted Miss Juliana Niza binti Ismail Adnan as it's advisor.

To promote the art to the whole school, a demonstration was staged on 21st October 2003 in conjunction with 'Hari Ikhtifal 2003' or 'Co-curriculum Day 2003'. Sensei Effendi, Sensei Efy, Sensei Phang and Sempai Farid shouldered the responsibility of gaining the school's trust as well as the student's interest in learning Yoshinkan Aikido. After the outstanding performance, the club received great response and 47 students signed up as members of Aikido Yoshinkan Shudokan Club. Thus, SMKA Maahad Hamidiah became the first school in Malaysia to apply Yoshinkan Aikido at school level. To date, the club has 56 members and the number is still growing.
